Aligning Organisational Culture with Strategy at a Sugar Manufacturing Company in Kenya

Situation

A sugar manufacturing company based in Western Kenya partnered with us to conduct an organisational culture survey and develop model a culture which would help them deliver on their five year’ strategic plan. The organisation culture model was meant to help the firm to come up with a suitable culture built on renowned organisation culture models that would identify the gaps to the desired culture and define the change program to help the company to transition to the desired culture.

Solution

To get a better understanding of the firm’s priority areas, we used the Denison Path to High Performance Mode l process which enabled us to create a robust cultural awareness and clarifying key business priorities to engender thoughtful action through stakeholder Focused Group Discussions. We deployed Culture Survey Tool – Denison Organization Culture Survey (DOCS), which contains four key drivers of high performance – mission, adaptability, involvement, and consistency in order to identify areas of focus.
Through the cumulative responses from the survey, we assisted the firm gain insight on the following questions:
Does your team understand your mission and where you’re headed?
Do you believe the firm can stay competitive and adapt to changes in the market?
Are your people involved, and do they feel they have the training they need?
Are your values clear and being lived out through consistent processes?

We obtained a survey report that provided a statistical feedback against a global benchmark. The survey results were mapped on the Denison Model where the cumulative data provided insights on areas of improvement and discord in the four key areas of high performance. This provided a baseline against which to measure future improvement. We also provided a new culture with agreed upon values for adoption.

We submitted an elaborate change program to the Management for implementation.
